Why Do I Have Low Water Pressure?

A weak shower is one of the most common plumbing complaints. The cause might be a five-minute fix or a sign your hot water system needs upgrading. Here's how to narrow it down.

Is it one tap or the whole house?

Start here. One tap or fixture usually means a blocked aerator, a partly closed valve, or a faulty mixer — often a quick fix. The whole house points to something bigger: a low-pressure hot water system, a partly closed main valve, a pressure-reducing valve issue, or a supply problem.

Common causes we see

  • Blocked aerator on the tap — unscrew and clean it
  • Low-pressure hot water cylinder — gives weak hot flow especially upstairs
  • Partly closed toby or main valve
  • Failing pressure-reducing valve or tempering valve
  • Old, scaled or corroded pipework

The upgrade that fixes most weak showers

If your hot water is on a low-pressure system, switching to mains pressure (a new cylinder or a califont) transforms the shower. It's the most common real fix we recommend when pressure is weak on hot but fine on cold. We'll diagnose the cause before suggesting anything.

How we can help

FAQ

Quick answers

Why is only my hot water pressure low?

That usually means a low-pressure hot water cylinder. Upgrading to mains pressure gives much stronger hot flow, especially for showers.

Can low water pressure be fixed cheaply?

Sometimes — a blocked aerator or partly closed valve is a quick fix. Whole-house or hot-only issues may need valve or cylinder work. We diagnose first.
