Replacing a Hot Water Cylinder in NZ: Cost & What to Expect

If your hot water cylinder is leaking, old or struggling to keep up, you're probably wondering what a replacement costs and whether it's worth repairing. Here's an honest, plain-English rundown.

How much does a new hot water cylinder cost?

As a rough guide in New Zealand, expect to pay somewhere around $2,000–$4,500 supplied and installed for a standard electric mains-pressure cylinder, depending on size and how much pipework needs changing. Converting an old low-pressure system to mains pressure, or switching to gas continuous-flow, usually sits at the higher end because more work is involved.

The big cost drivers are cylinder size (180L vs 300L), the type of system, and whether your existing valves, tempering valve and pipework are up to current standard. We always quote the full job upfront so there are no surprises.

Repair or replace?

If your cylinder is relatively new and the fault is an element, thermostat or valve, a repair is often the smart, cheaper option. But if it's leaking from the tank itself, badly corroded, or more than ~12–15 years old, replacement is usually the better value — a patched-up old cylinder tends to fail again soon.

Signs your cylinder needs replacing

  • Water pooling around or under the cylinder (a tank leak)
  • Rusty or discoloured hot water
  • Running out of hot water much faster than it used to
  • Banging, rumbling or hissing noises
  • It's old and on low pressure — an upgrade gives stronger flow

What's involved in the swap

A straightforward like-for-like replacement is usually a half-day job: we isolate the water and power, drain and remove the old cylinder, fit the new one with a compliant tempering and pressure-relief valve, refill, and test. You'll get a short planned hot-water outage, which we arrange with you. All work is done by registered plumbers and certified where required.

How we can help

FAQ

Quick answers

How long does a hot water cylinder last in NZ?

Most mains-pressure cylinders last around 12–15 years, sometimes longer with good water quality. Once they start leaking from the tank, replacement is the only fix.

Is a bigger cylinder always better?

Not necessarily — an oversized cylinder costs more to buy and to keep hot. We size it to your household so you're not paying to heat water you don't use.

Can I switch from electric to gas hot water?

Yes — many homes move to gas continuous-flow (a califont) for endless hot water. It needs a gasfitter and the right gas supply, which we can sort.
