“Califont” is the Kiwi name for a gas continuous-flow water heater. Instead of storing hot water in a tank, it heats water on demand as it flows through — so you never run out. Here's how they work and whether one suits your home.

When you turn on a hot tap, water flows through the califont and a gas burner heats it instantly. When you turn the tap off, the burner shuts down. There's no storage tank constantly using energy to keep water hot — you only heat what you use, when you use it.
A cylinder stores a fixed amount of hot water; once it's gone, you wait for it to reheat. A califont never runs out but depends on gas and flow rate. If you have gas available and hate running out of hot water, a califont is well worth considering. If you're all-electric, a mains-pressure cylinder may make more sense.
