No Hot Water? A Calm Troubleshooting Checklist

A cold shower on a frosty Taupō morning is no fun. Before you panic, there are a few safe things you can check yourself — here's a calm, step-by-step rundown for both electric and gas systems.

Published 2026-06-02 · Taupō Plumbers

First, work out what kind of system you have

The checks depend on your hot water type. An electric cylinder is a large insulated tank, usually in a cupboard or garage. A gas califont (continuous-flow) is a compact wall-mounted unit with a flue. And it matters whether you're on mains pressure or low pressure. Knowing which you have tells you where to look first.

Electric cylinder: what to check

  • The switchboard — look for a tripped breaker or blown fuse labelled hot water or cylinder, and switch it back on. If it trips again straight away, stop and call a plumber, as that points to a faulty element.
  • Lukewarm but not hot — this often means one element or thermostat has failed (many cylinders have two). That's a plumber repair, not a DIY one.
  • Night-rate supply — some cylinders run on controlled night-rate power; after heavy use they may not recover until the next cycle.

Never open up a cylinder or touch the element wiring yourself — it's mains electricity and water together.

Gas or califont: what to check

  • Gas supply — check the LPG bottle isn't empty and the valve is open, or that natural gas is on. A swapped-empty bottle is a very common cause.
  • The pilot or ignition — modern califonts ignite electrically; older ones have a pilot light that can blow out. Follow the unit's relight instructions, and if it won't stay lit, call a gasfitter.
  • Error code on the display — note it down; it helps us diagnose quickly.

If you ever smell gas, stop — turn the gas off at the bottle or meter, ventilate, and call a gasfitter.

When to stop and call a plumber or gasfitter

Call in a professional if: the breaker keeps tripping, water is leaking from the cylinder, you smell gas, the califont throws an error or won't ignite, or you've checked the basics and still have no hot water. Taupō's cold winters put real demand on hot water systems, and they tend to give out on the frostiest mornings — exactly when you need them. Our hot water team diagnoses electric and gas faults fast, and we're on call 24/7 if you're left without.

How we can help

FAQ

Quick answers

Why do I suddenly have no hot water?

Common causes are a tripped breaker or failed element on an electric cylinder, or an empty gas bottle or pilot fault on a califont. Check those safely first, then call a plumber if it's not resolved.

My hot water is warm but not hot — why?

On an electric cylinder that usually means one of the two elements or thermostats has failed, so you only get partial heating. A plumber can test and replace the faulty part.

Is no hot water an emergency?

Not usually on its own, but a leaking cylinder or a gas smell is. In a cold Taupō winter we treat sudden hot water failures as a priority and can come out quickly — call us any time.
