The most common NZ system: a tank heated by an element. Pros — simple, works anywhere, cheap to install, pairs well with night-rate power and solar. Cons — runs out if you use it all, standing heat loss from the tank, and low-pressure versions give weak flow.
A gas califont heats water on demand. Pros — never runs out, efficient (no tank loss), compact. Cons — needs a gas supply (natural gas or LPG), flow rate limits very high simultaneous demand, and must be installed by a registered gasfitter.
If you have gas available and hate running out of hot water, a califont is hard to beat. If you're all-electric (or want to pair with solar/night rates), a mains-pressure cylinder is the sensible choice. We'll look at your supply, household size and budget and give you a straight recommendation.
FAQ
It depends on your gas and electricity prices and usage. Gas continuous-flow avoids tank standing loss; electric can be very cheap on night rates or with solar. We can compare for your situation.
